From $32k to $10m: Couple’s mega property sell-off

A Gold Coast couple reveal how they traded up to a multimillion-dollar portfolio after selling five properties in just under three months.

Why investors are jumping back into the market

Gold Coast couple Brynley King and Tyson Sawrey traded up from a $32,000 unit deposit to a $10m portfolio after selling five properties in just under three months.

Their investment journey began in 2016 with the purchase of a Surfers Paradise apartment for $318,000, flipped two years later for a $157,000 profit after a tight-budget renovation.

“We were just starting out and did a full gut job renovation,” Ms King said. “We ended up running out of money three-quarters of the way through and had to borrow $10,000 to finish it.”

Ms King, a 33-year-old digital marketer, and Mr Sawrey, 36, a carpenter, caught the “renovation bug,” taking on projects including three more units, a commercial warehouse, and a vacant block of land in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

They had intended to build a home on the vacant site but held off due to escalating post-pandemic construction costs.

In April last year, they splurged on a $3.7m acreage home in Tallai with a pool, tennis court and panoramic views, sparking their recent property sell-off.

“Both our mouths dropped when we saw the Tallai property,” Ms King said.

“We knew it would be stressful, but we wondered if selling some of our existing properties could make it work.”

The couple negotiated an eight-month settlement for the Tallai home, subject to selling three units within 120 days.

After pulling off the high-stakes deal, they decided to “go all in,” listing their remaining properties and selling a total of $5m worth of assets between May and August.

Their final property, a contemporary three-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 2 The Avenue, Nerang, is scheduled to go to auction on October 25 with agent Hanan Crawley.

The stunning single-level home features a new pool, an entertaining terrace, custom skylights, and sleek interior finishes including black cabinetry, timber, and stone.

“We bought this house because it had a perfect layout and we could both see the potential in this property and how we would transform it,” Ms King said.

“We added a $50,000 custom kitchen, 14m of bifold doors opening onto the alfresco area, and six skylights to completely transform this space into our best renovation to date.

“As we both intended on staying in this house longterm, we did all of the finishes and selections to what we truly wanted in a house.”

Securing their multimillion-dollar dream home in Tallai marked the culmination of their eight-year journey navigating rising property prices and the challenges of the construction industry.

“There’s still potential for other young people to get into the market and give it a go,” Ms King said.

“The hardest one is always the first, but with enough determination and hard work, it’s possible.”
