Five best homes on the market in Brisbane right now

An inner-city corner store that grew into an art gallery before being turned into an all-star home is among five of the best homes on the market in Brisbane right now.

2024 providing strongest market conditions in years

A heritage building near Brisbane’s city has gone through many changes since it began in the 1920s – and is now a large multistorey house for the eager new homeowner.

The four-bedroom, five-bathroom property at 253 Moray St, New Farm, was once established as ‘Smalley’ Stores’: providing housing provisions before the rise of chain stores across the nation.

The once-small home has also been an art gallery and architect’s office, turning from a modest community area into a spot for luxury living.

Vendor Leigh Fracchia said the two-storey building was big enough to have a variety of uses for different buyers, both business and residential.

“It could be an office area or business at the front, and then a residence at the back … or it could be a family home,” he said.

The home features three separate areas to accommodate for a variety of different living styles.

Featuring a gallery-style kitchen, a wine cellar and a balcony with a view of Brisbane City from across the river, the home has been updated to modern needs while still maintaining the corner shop from when it was first made.

This four-bedroom, three-bathroom house at 27 Lama St, Chelmer, has been owned by the Humble family for nearly 30 years.

Over that time, owners Jocelyn and Guy Humble turned the hundred year-old property into their dream home, expanding the unique building with additional rooms and amenities.

While they added the pool and a media room to the property – and nurtured its backyard garden – the couple were keen to keep many of the older, vintage parts of the house that make it pop: such as the brick fireplace, which they’ve constructed an oven beneath to feed into the old chimney.

The renovation project was a balancing act of updating and modernising the home’s features, while keeping many of the traits that made the owners fall in love with it.

“We were very careful to preserve all the old features,” Ms Humble said. “It’s got a real soul this house.”

The family is heavily involved in the selling process, with their son as an agent helping to sell the property.

“We’d really like another family to love this house the way we have,” Ms Humble said.

Ray White Sherwood | Graceville will have the property up for auction on Saturday August 3.

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom house at 11 Foch St, Ashgrove, has an impressive family history in its walls.

Turning 100 years old next year, the home was built by the Finlayson family of Finlayson’s Timber and Hardware.

Two members of the family were literally born in the house, and the original owners then passed on several effects from the home to its current vendors, Joe and Fran Olejnik.

“It was in really good condition when we bought it,” said Mr Olejnik. “And then we’ve just brought it up another level.”

A bronze Montrose plate is one of many of the home’s artefacts that will be passed down from owner to owner.

The two-storey building features stained-glass windows, French doors and newly-added carpeting and airconditioning systems. In particular, Mr Olejnik was proud of how the family had grown the garden so that greenery now surrounds the entire property.

“What I really like is the opportunity to have privacy and tranquillity when you go outside,” he said.

The course feeds into the Brisbane River, allowing for a popular walking space for residents and cyclists who want a view by the water.

Vendor Skye Rayner said the home was a tranquil spot that could both entertain her family and give her plenty of space to relax.

“It’s a great family area, [and] it’s a very quiet area,” she said. “We would have people come visit us and say they felt like they’re in a tropical rainforest, with the birds and vegetation.”

Brisbane Real Estate agent Kel Goesch said a big part of the home’s appeal was offering a taste of country living at a more affordable price for buyers.

“The history and the feel of the cottage itself is quite amazing,” he said. “You can basically take advantage of that semirural and country lifestyle without having the maintenance and the cost associated with buying a larger acreage property.”

Inspections are currently being held at the home.
