Donald Trump’s old ‘starter mansion’ that was said to be ‘dripping in gold’ has finally been sold after a decade on and off the market.

After more than 10 years on and off the market, Donald Trump’s former mansion has sold for an eye-watering sum.

The former Connecticut mansion that Trump lived in with his first wife Ivana has just been sold for US$31.5m (A$46.8m).

At one state its asking price was as high as US$54m.

However, the selling price is up from the $US29.9m guide that was offered more recently.

Rated as a ‘started mansion’ the home is said to be ‘dripping in gold leaf’.

According to the New York Post, the Georgian mansion encompasses some 20,000 square feet and offers panoramic views of the Long Island Sound.

The Trumps owned it in the 1980s, and Ivana, who died in July at age 73 after falling down the stairs in her Manhattan home, kept it following their 1992 divorce.

This Greenwich, Connecticut property was described as Donald and Ivana Trump’s starter mansion.

In 1982 — five years into their marriage — the future president, then 35, and his now-late ex-wife Ivana, then 33, purchased the estate for $4 million.

Comprised of a main house and a guesthouse, the Georgian colonial estate is made up of eight bedrooms and 13 bathrooms and stands on a 5.8-acre peninsula.

At the time the power couple had moved into the home, Ivana was simultaneously working to remodel the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan that Donald had purchased in the early 1980s, according to Top Ten Real Estate Deals.

While decorating the Plaza, Ivana incorporated many of the same materials into their new Connecticut compound, including gold leaf features, chandeliers and crown moldings.

A previous listing described the Greenwich home as “dripping in gold leaf.”

Amid their contentious early-1990s divorce, Ivana acquired the property and later sold the home for $15 million in 1998.

The new owners made some new additions to the spread, including toning down the overly opulent vibe — adding tennis courts, an indoor lap pool and guest quarters.

Other features of the home include a three-storey rotunda foyer with a grand staircase and several formal living rooms.

Built in 1939 for Robert Hillas, the former president of the Super Heater Company in New York City, the compound boasts beautiful water views.

Other amenities include a home theatre, a putting green, a pool and sauna and three fully equipped staff apartments.

Outdoor features also include multiple patios and terraces.

The property’s most recent sellers, financier Robert Steinberg and his wife, Suzanne Steinberg, purchased it in 1998 for $15 million.

After their purchase, the couple spent some two years renovating the structure — removing gilded touches and tacking on an extra 5,000 square feet, which now house an indoor pool for doing laps and two apartments for guests.

Outside, the Steinbergs put in a tennis court and a putting green — and even rebuilt the sea wall and fixed the outdoor pool.

As for its other inclusions, there are eight bedrooms, staff quarters and even a movie theatre. .

The family first listed the estate in 2009 for US$50 million.

After its peak asking price of US$54 million, it returned to market more recently with a US$32 million price tag.

The couple now spends most of their time in Delray Beach, Florida, where they built a home.

“I had priced it at a very high price initially with the concept that if someone really wants it, I guess I’ll sell it,” Robert Steinberg told The Wall St Journal.

“But I mispriced it.” He added that in the subsequent years, prospective buyers came in without making any real offer — and Steinberg even rejected offers to sell the property in pieces.
