One of the north shore’s oldest waterfront properties has come to market this week looking for only its fifth owner in 128 years.

Fairlie is a historic 1896 early Federation home on 35m of waterfront at Longueville. The house has been renovated and extended with river views and there is a new boat house and ramp. Number 15 Norfolk Rd is on 1763 sqm of land, has a $15m guide and goes to auction at the end of June.

Simon Harrison, of Belle Lane Cove, said Fairlie is a magnificent estate with heated infinity pool and spa plus a private self-contained studio – which was fashioned from the butler’s quarters.

“It is such a rare commodity, really beautiful and we have had good interest already with many local buyers,” he said.

Fairlie is a five-bedroom, five-bathroom home in a tightly held cul-de-sac with views over Lane Cove River and Tambourine Bay. When Craig and Heidi Mason bought the property ten years ago it was tired and some original features had been hidden under WWII era plasterboards.

The Masons restored internal sandstone steps to their former glory, uncovered a kitchen trap door leading to a hidden room and a sandstone walled wine cellar and added a modern wing which connects to the original home via a glass bridge. They also rebuilt the conservatory and opened the original veranda to better connect the house to the water.

There are formal and informal zones that open to entertainers’ decks, an oversized kitchen island, butler’s pantry and breakfast room. And the main bedroom has bespoke joinery and full ensuite. There is also an office, studio flat and three-car garage with storage.

Fairlie was built by printmaker, surveyor and inventor Fairlie Harold Tronson and later was owned for six decades by the Ryan family including William Ryan who was senior surgeon at the Mater Hospital.

It is among the top ten most valuable homes in Longueville, which has a suburb record of $23.5m. According to PropTrack the median house price in Longueville is $4.92m.
