Inside Joe Biden’s ‘quitter’s hideout’

Where is Joe Biden? The US President hasn’t been seen in almost a week and this is where he’s been laying low following his shock announcement.

Joe Biden is bunkering down for an extended stay at his Delaware home, following his withdrawal from the US presidential race.

It is where Biden made the decision to step down as the Democrats’ nominee for the November 6 election and where the 81-year-old has been recovering from a bout of Covid.

The one-term President has previously claimed his long-time home in Rehoboth, Delaware, allowed him to get better in touch with himself and the mood of the US people.

“I said when I was running, I wanted to be president — not to live in the White House, but to be able to make the decisions about the future of the country,” Biden said in February 2021, adding that living in the White House is “a little like a gilded cage in terms of being able to walk outside and do things.”

The Delaware home has long been attacked by Biden’s critics as a place he can meet with visitors without being bound by White House visitor logs regulations.

It has also been labelled a ‘quitter’s hideout’ by the President’s critics following his big decision.

Joe Biden and his wife Jill bought the three-storey, six-bedroom home in 2017 as a place to spend family time away from Washington DC.

The home features two large verandas, outdoor showers, a dog-washing facility and an elevator.

Above the front door, a sign reads ‘Beau’s Gift’ a reference to the Biden’s son who died of brain cancer in 2015.

Biden has often sought refuge at the beachside home.

He did so in July last year after a “hellish week” after the discovery of cocaine in a cubby near the West Wing’s basement entrance, just steps away from the Situation Room.

The White House never revealed who brought the drug into the world’s most powerful building.

President Biden has canceled nine trips that were scheduled for the next two weeks after suddenly dropping out of the 2024 race.

Biden was scheduled to leave Monday for the West Coast, where he was to make stops in California, Denver, Houston and Austin – but all of those trips have been suddenly canceled, a White House source told the New York Post.

Biden was set to leave his home in Rehoboth on Monday, but extended his stay until Wednesday after announcing the end of his campaign the night before.

The source was not given any reason behind why the White House cancelled the trips.

Biden’s illness was not immediately connected to the decision, as presidential physician Kevin O’Connor on Monday said Biden had all but recovered from the illness.

“They started canceling stuff when he announced he wasn’t seeking reelection,” the source said, adding that the trips were a mix of campaign and official presidential stops.

Biden was also tentatively expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, but he has no plans to return to DC.

Biden, 81, hasn’t been seen in public since Wednesday night when he was diagnosed with Covid. After the diagnosis, the president was seen struggling to get off Air Force One and into his motorcade.

Kamala Harris spoke to Biden’s Covid recovery in her speech speaking about his “legacy” on Monday at the White House. The vice president, who Biden endorsed to replace him as the nominee, said Biden “wanted to be here today.”

“He is feeling much better and recovering fast, and he looks forward to getting back on the road,” Harris added.

Harris flew to Delaware on Monday to say “hello” to the campaign staff, as she is taking over the 2024 bid after Biden’s drop.

Biden – with heavily slurred speech – called into the HQ meeting to speak to staffers and Harris, informing them that “the name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn’t changed.”

Biden’s lack of physical presence or video address has led some to be alarmed about his whereabouts, with some Republican members of Congress calling for a “proof of life” check

The letter announcing the suspension of his campaign was not mounted on official White House letterhead and the signature appeared to be electronically added.

A White House official said Biden received virtual briefings on homeland security and national security from Rehoboth on Monday.

Biden spokesperson Andrew Bates told The Post on Sunday that Biden “looks forward to finishing his term and delivering more historic results for the American people.”

The Rehoboth Beach home hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground for Joe Biden though. It was where he fell over his bike in June 2022. One of many incidents that led to queries over his fitness for office.

Biden has another home nearby in Wilmington, which he has refinaced a mindboggling 20 times.
