The three-bedroom home sits on a quarter-acre block inside the town, with one bathroom and a shed.

Though the cladding appears to have partially come off the front of the house and the garden is a few tufts of grass surrounded by dirt, the vendor got the full asking price.

Competition was fierce with multiple cash offers.

The town of Sandstone is small and remote, with a population of 100 people. It lies nearly 600km northeast of Perth and nearest large supermarket is two-and-a-half hours away.

Despite its remote location, Sandstone is a popular destination for prospectors due to its long history of goldmining which stretches back to the 1890s.

Estate agent Will McKenzie from Professionals Geraldton told The West Australian that the house had been a hit.

“Prospecting is big in Sandstone,” he said.

“It coincides with the wildflower season and that’s when we get all the grey nomads up here. Everyone comes up to try their luck finding a big nugget.”

The buyers were a couple from Perth, who plan to use the home as a base in the prospecting season.

While believed to be Australia’s cheapest house, Aussies can still go lower with blocks of land, with cheap quarter-acre blocks selling for $10,000 in Yalgoo, a town four hours west of Sandstone.
