A historic public cottage formerly used to house Sydney waterside workers has enticed buyers looking to transform it into an Airbnb.
High St in Millers Point was an integral part of the national government’s plans to provide public housing to improve the living conditions of the waterside works in the early twentieth century.
In addition to providing accommodation and other facilities close to the wharves, the workers’ cottages were a broader part of the push for urban renewal post the 1900 bubonic plague outbreak.
LJ Hooker’s Patrick Huynh has listed the two bedroom and one bathroom apartment at 10a High St with a guide of $1.95m – $2.1m.

Mr Huynh said there was a potential to transform the cottage into an Airbnb, with one of the neighbouring properties reportedly making around $140,000 per year.
“These original cottages in Miller’s Point don’t come up very often for sale, so they’re an incredibly rare and highly sought after asset when they do.
“An investor could buy the property and rent it out for $1,2000 per week with $975 for Strata per quarter.”
Other wharves and buildings were being created around Sydney Harbour during this time, including the Rocks and Dawes Point as part of the Sydney Harbour Trust formed in 1901.
Many of these cottages still stand today and are used as rooftop terrace apartments with views over the water.
Public housing has continued to be a substantial part of the suburb’s identity with ties to the maritime industry conserved through community action through the 1970s and 1980s.
The High St apartment is one of four restored heritage buildings that is up for sale and includes a private courtyard and separate living and dining rooms.
“This property is ideal for a buyer who wants to capitalise on the location, with each unit owner able to apply for shops and cafes.
Over the past year, median prices for properties in Millers Point have jumped up by 53.9 per cent – costing $2.925m to buy.
