The mansion where Brittany Murphy died has been put back on the market for the third time in a year, slashing $US2 million ($A3.1 million) from its original asking price.

The “Clueless” star died inside the Los Angeles home in 2009, six years after she moved into the property. Five months later, her husband, Simon Monjack, also died there, Realtor reports.

The actor’s cause of death was later revealed as a combination of pneumonia, anaemia, and excessive use of prescription medications, while her husband’s passing was determined to have been caused by near-identical circumstances.

However, their deaths sparked a wave of conspiracy theories about the property.

The residence was also once home to pop star Britney Spears, who had previously told friends that she fled the home after encountering what she described as “bad spirits,” an experience that left her so shaken, she refused to ever return.

It’s unclear whether the home’s morbid history has had an impact on its ability to find a buyer.

However, it has bounced on and off the market multiple times since initially being listed in July 2024 with an asking price of $US18.99 million ($A30.1 million).

Six weeks later, that listing was removed, only for the home to return to the market in September, this time asking $US17.99 million ($A28.5 million).

The home vanished from the market again a few weeks later, before being relisted on March 17 with a price of $US16.99 million ($A27 million).

Murphy had purchased the home from Spears in 2003, when she paid $US3.85 million for the mansion — which came fully furnished.

Spears is understood to have owned the property for just a short period of time, during which she is said to have experienced a horrifying paranormal encounter that left her too terrified to ever live in the home again, according to her former makeup artist, Julianne Kaye.

Kaye alleged during a 2021 appearance on the “We Need to Talk About Britney” podcast that her former client fled the home after being left convinced that “bad spirits” were trying to “push her down the stairs.”

“[Spears] had that place up on Sunset Plaza, and I’m just gonna say, this is really weird,” Kaye began.

“She calls me … I had my friend do a reiki healing on her. I guess she’d had a crazy partying weekend and needed to relax.

“He left, and she swears to God that he opened some spirit portal or something, and these bad spirits had come in and they were trying to push her down the stairs or something crazy.

“It was so bad that she left. She went to the Casa Del Mar hotel to stay there and never went back to the house. She goes, ‘I know you’re going to think I’m crazy. I’m not crazy. I know what I saw, I know what I felt.”

Spears is thought to have never spent another night in the property and ultimately sold it on to Murphy, who, according to her late husband, also had some uncomfortable feelings about the home.

In a 2011 piece about Murphy’s “final difficult days,” The Hollywood Reporter stated that Monjack had claimed his wife believed the home, which is located on Rising Glen Road, was “unlucky” and had been planning to move to New York before her death.

“She absolutely hated the Rising Glen house,” Monjack told the outlet before his own death.

“Every time we would drive up Sunset, Brit would say, ‘Please can we stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel?’ I’d say, ‘Honey, you’ve got to be realistic. We have out house, a 10,000-square-foot home, we’re going to stay in it.’”

As a result of both Spears’ and Murphy’s private comments about the home, it has become the source of morbid fascination among some.

While others have gone as far as to suggest it is “cursed,” something that has made it rather tricky to sell in the years since Murphy and Monjack’s deaths.

Murphy’s mother, Sharon, eventually managed to sell the property in 2011 at a significant loss, accepting an offer of US$2.7 million, more than $US1 million less than her daughter had paid for it eight years earlier.

The property that now stands on the original lot, is not the exact same dwelling where Murphy and Spears lived.

That home was torn down in 2013 in order to make way for an ultra-modern six-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom mansion, which was sold in March 2017 for $US14.53 million.

Still, the conspiracy theories surrounding the property’s history continue to plague its appearances on the market, despite the listing previously stating that it has been through a “rebirth” since it was last purchased, with the original description noting that its most recent renovation was a “complete metamorphosis.”

“As you approach the property, the newly redesigned exterior greets you with its elegant stone and tile finish, a preview of the transformative journey that awaits within,” the listing declares.

The latest renovations to the property saw an entirely new chef’s kitchen and butler’s pantry installed, with the listing noting that the home has multiple indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, ideal for anyone who loves to throw a gathering.

The primary suite has been “recently enhanced” with its own vanity room, while also boasting dual bathrooms, multiple walk-in closets, and a wraparound terrace.

However, ahead of its latest appearance on the market, the listing was rewritten, removing all mention of “rebirth” and instead calling attention to the home’s “elegant finishes” and “resort-inspired backyard.”

“With a flawless blend of architectural brilliance and contemporary elegance, this home is a true masterpiece, offering an unparalleled living experience in one of L.A.’s most sought-after neighbourhoods,” it concludes.
