Five of Queensland’s best homes up for grabs this week
Renowned architect Michael Rayner has his personal home up for sale, with five other premium properties hitting the market.
Renowned Australian architect Michael Rayner has worked on projects like the Sydney Football Stadium and the Kurilpa Bridge. Now, he’s selling his Brisbane home of almost 30 years, which he rebuilt in 2010 with his own design.
This, along with four other properties, are some of Queensland's’s best homes up for sale this week.
The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at 135 Ryan St, West End, is a spacious 607 sqm block by the Brisbane River – but most of that space is in its length, not its width.
Being a narrow block of land, Mr Rayner approached redesigning the property as if he was building a boat. “[I realised] the river’s really why we were living there,” he said. “Breaking it up to two separate pavilions gave us views of the water from both parts.”
Mr Rayner connected the streetside and riverside pavilions with a connecting ‘bridge’, along with an atrium swimming pool in the centre. Windows were designed to give rooms from both ends a view out to the water, while keeping the two spaces separated for those looking for a dual-living lifestyle.
“The two pavilions work perfect, because the kids are in one and ours are in another, so ours is like a retreat,” Mr Rayner said. “They loved it, because it gave them some autonomy and privacy.”
With a facade inspired by Mr Rayner’s love for tactile visual art, and three separate floors to enjoy the home’s living and entertainment spaces, the house is designed feel both convenient and luxurious – and that’s before you step into the garden, leading right to a private jetty.
“The house was designed so that visually you would feel connected with everything else, no matter where someone was,” Mr Rayner said.
Alex Jordan and Adriana Cameron of McGrath Estate Agents, Paddington, are accepting offers over $4.35 million for the home.
30/3544 Lamington National Park Rd, O’Reilly
The two-bedroom, two-bathroom villa at 30/3544 Lamington National Park Rd, O’Reilly, sits in a lush rainforest retreat, and is built to make the most of its location.
Surrounded by the world-heritage listed Lamington National Park, ‘Bower 30’ is the closest villa to the short walking trail that takes residents up to the amenities of O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, from morning bird walks to late night glow-worm encounters.
Airconditioned rooms allow for ease of living no matter the conditions – and a sheltered alfresco deck with a spa allows one to bathe in the evening sunset every day.
Sitting at the end of a long drive into the park, the home is perfect for people seeking a holiday home, or those who want to just get away from it all.

With electric gates leading into the huge property, residents are treated to landscaped grounds with automated garden lighting, huge entertainment spaces with timber flooring and cozy fireplaces, and bedrooms that share a sweeping balcony overlooking the river.

The five-bedroom, five-bathroom property at 22 Sydney St, New Farm, is a rare offering with its own take on a distinct architectural style.
Co-founder of luxury wellness brand Kailo, Kristy Morris, renovated her home of 17 years to give it a contemporary finish, while keeping close to its roots as a Californian bungalow.
“It was really important to honour its history and keep it as a character home,” she said. “There are not many Californian bungalows available in Queensland, so quite a unique and rare property.”
Before renovations, the home’s visual style involved bright yellow, purple and white. While much of the house has been redone, Ms Morris took efforts to keep elements like bespoke stained glass sliding doors in the master bedroom.
The single-level property has a sea of entertainment and convenience offerings, while being in a calm and accessible area.
“You are minutes away from always feeling part of the wider community while being on a quiet corner location,” she said.
Sarah Hackett and Lauren Marmotta of Place New Farm are accepting offers for the home until December 5.
8/83 Birchwood Cres, Brookwater
The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 8/83 Birchwood Cres, Brookwater, is a luxury offering that’s being put on the market for the first time.
Named ‘Paragon’, the 883 sqm property sits in a private gated precinct, with private access to the Brookwater Gold & Country Club.
Near Opossum Creek Parklands, the home’s location offers pristine views: from the private balcony in the master retreat, to the natural light coming into the varied entertainment spaces on the ground floor.
Combined with outdoor living spaces, a magnesium pool and a custom-built bar, the house has been built for those who want a quieter, picturesque lifestyle south of the city.
Veronika Jasiecki and Milan Chipalkatty of Brookwater Realty are seeking offers over $3 million for the home.
