Forget a house. How about owning your very own North Queensland peninsula, complete with 7km of private beachfront, a house, caravan park site and a rodeo ground?

A huge 11,000-plus acres of land at Guthalungra, a small rural town south of Townsville, has hit the market, and is for sale by expressions of interest.

Bounded north and south by national park and east and west by the ocean, the property is called Cape Upstart, a name given to it by Captain Cook.

It is listed with Mark Beale of Ray White Whitsunday.

“The 7km of freehold, non-tidal sandy beach is the largest of its kind between the Whitsundays and Cairns,” the listing says.

“Cape Upstart has a remote feel but is directly off the Bruce Highway between Bowen and Ayr.

“The nearest airports are at Whitsunday Coast (Proserpine) and Townsville, each around 1.5 hours drive.”

The property, easily accessed from the Bruce Highway, includes a small three-bedroom, two-bathroom house with power, septic and internet.

There are 12km of graded roads and a freshwater spring-fed catchment, two reservoirs and a gravity-fed water system.

There is also 16 18-gallon holding tanks, a caravan park site with a shower and toilet block, plus a rodeo ground.

A large lake also attracts over 100 varieties of birds including black swans, ibis, cockatoos, lorikeets, jabirus and brolgas.

Mr Beale said the property had been owned by three mates from California for about 30 to 40 years.

“They bought it as a place to get out of America and back to nature,” Mr Beale said.

“But they are getting older now, and they are not getting out here as much as they used to.”

Publicly-available property records show it is owned by brothers Alan and Roger Richter and friend Joseph Tuminello.

Mr Beale said that the property had a simple house but “not a donga”, and had previously been open to the public.

“Years ago the public would come in and camp, and there was a small rodeo ground,” he said.

“It has got a bit of history.”

Prior to the three friends, the property was a cattle property known as Cape Upstart Station.

A website called The Cape Upstart Project talks of a “privately funded environmental restoration” seeking partners or investors.

“A former cattle station, we are returning the environment to a natural state and providing habitat for a large variety of wildlife,” the website says.

“We have flooded lowland pastures which create seasonal wetlands and attract over 200 species of birds.

“We hope to eliminate invasive weeds and feral animals, returning our land to a balanced and protected state.”

According to the Visit Burdekin tourism site, ‘The Cape” can only be reached by boat.

“This tranquil destination features crystal-clear waters, freshwater streams, and cascading waterfalls from the mountain tops,” it says.

“The area is also dotted with charming holiday homes, enhancing its peaceful atmosphere.”

Mr Beale said the current offering was “more of a lifestyle property”, adding that when landing by helicopter, buyers could really see the “treasures” on offer.
