Family parts with home of 63 years in “emotional” goodbye at auction
This pristine post-war home was a blast from the past for its new buyers, winning at a crowded auction event.
Two elderly homeowners experienced an “emotional” sale after parting with their home of 63 years at a morning auction.
The three-bedroom, one-bathroom house at 43 Royds St, Carina, is a post-war residence that’s been kept largely unchanged and in pristine condition for decades.
With its owners too old to stay there, their daughter Susan Briant helped to sell the property with Place Bulimba on their behalf.
Agent Anna Dunne said the home had been on the market since just before Christmas, and represented a big life change for the family.
“They raised their children there,” she said, adding the house remained “all original”.
The auction took place on Friday morning, at Place’s “The Summer Day” – their first auction event of the year.
At the auction site, bidding began at $900,000, but was quickly paused after reaching $955,000.
What followed was “a bit of an arm wrestle”, according to Ms Dunne, where both vendors and buyers tried to find a happy medium between what they wanted the property to sell for.
Finally, the property sold around midday for $1,065,000.
The buyers were a local family of first-home buyers, including a schoolteacher and small business owner.
Looking to have children, the couple were initially seeking townhouses, before finding the 673 sqm Carina property.
“They really wanted something with a little bit of land near a local school,” Ms Dunne said.
Ms Dunne reported both vendors and buyers were happy with the sale – especially when the vendors heard the new buyers liked the home’s retro feel, and would not be knocking it down for a rebuild.
“[The vendors], they’re happy they can now move on, and that it’s gone to a family,” Ms Dunne said. “We had so many groups come through the property; it just takes that one buyer.”
