Biggest sale of year: Trophy home with George Clooney inspired fire pit

Riverfront trophy home with George Clooney inspired fire pit sells for more than $20 million in the city’s biggest sale this year.

When the experts believe we'll see lower interest rates

Soaring living costs and high interest rates aren’t hurting Brisbane’s prestige property market, with a riverfront trophy home selling for more than $20 million in the city’s biggest sale this year.

The head-turning property called ‘Mimosa’ at 46 Gordon Street in the inner-city suburb of Hawthorne sits on a whopping 2985 sqm block with 32m of river frontage, a 20m private jetty, pool, tennis court, and a George Clooney inspired fire pit.

Property developer, Todd Brown and his wife, Arabella, of Belmonde Property Group, first listed the six-bedroom stunner early this year before accepting this offer from a local family.

It comes as Brisbane home prices continue to defy expectations, climbing more than 14 per cent in the past 12 months — some suburbs as much as 40 per cent — while the Sydney and Melbourne markets are slowing down.

Sarah Hackett of Place Estate Agents negotiated the sale, but declined to comment on the price or the identity of the buyer due to a confidentiality agreement.

It is understood to be more than $20 million, but not as high as the Brisbane record of $20.5 million, set by 101 Welsby St, New Farm, in April 2023.

Mrs Hackett said the property attracted four written offers — all from local buyers.

“The level of engagement from local buyers was remarkable,” Mrs Hackett said. “This sale is a testament to the demand for premier properties in Brisbane.

“The competitive interest and multiple offers we received are indicative of the strong market for high-quality homes in Hawthorne.

“Representing ‘Mimosa’ has been a highlight of my career. This property not only exemplifies luxury but also embodies the essence of Brisbane living.”

The Browns spotted the block during a serendipitous ferry trip on a City Cat, where a family friend pointed it out and put them in touch with the owner.

They purchased the property off market for $6.1 million in 2014, and set about rebuilding the weatherboard cottage on the site.

“We’d been looking for a property on that stretch of the river for a while,” Mr Brown told News Corp earlier this year.

“We’d moved from South Australia and felt it was the most beautiful part of the Brisbane River.

“The outlook to Teneriffe opposite with the historic wool stores is unbelievable. It’s a wide part of the river, the allotments are level, and we really wanted to have a relationship with the river.”

Ceilings lined with timber battens injects warmth alongside stone features, custom New Guinea rosewood joinery, travertine tiles and a mix of carpeted and French oak parquetry floors.

The central open-plan kitchen, a non-negotiable, is finished in Calacatta marble with top-of-the-range Wolf and Miele appliances, a butler’s pantry, and cool room.

It forms a central point to the entire layout, with big timber sliding doors seamlessly linking the living space with the garden, pool, bar, integrated barbecue pavilion and river front.

There’s even what Mr Brown describes as a “George Clooney-inspired fire pit”.

“It’s been an enormous amount of fun; we’ve spent plenty of lazy afternoons and evenings there.”
