THE biggest office relocation in Western Australia's history is underway, with about 3000 BHP Billiton workers moving into Perth's newest building.

BHP Billiton will be the lead tenant at the new, 234-metre tall Brookfield Place tower, which is now Perth's second tallest building behind Central Park, both on St Georges Terrace.

The mining giant will occupy 34 of the 45 floors as it brings the majority of its Perth employees together in the one central location from 21 offices scattered around the city.

The move will be completed by the third quarter of 2012.

The biggest push is underway this weekend with a team of 85 removalists working around the clock, BHP Billiton said in a statement.

Vice-president external affairs for WA, Julius Matthys, said the new, entirely open-plan office represented the biggest grouping of BHP Billiton employees in a single building anywhere in the world.

The company's head office will remain in Melbourne.
