A charming cottage in the southeast corner of the city holds more than what meets the eye. Check out the interiors.

Navigating a buyers' market this Spring

A Torrens-titled city cottage offers a lifestyle unlike anything else in a tightly-held southeastern corner of the city.

‘St Vin’s Cottage’ at 18 Vincent St, Adelaide is not something you come across every day. From the outside, it looks like a charming cottage but the moment you step inside, you are transported into a different world.

Stark-white interiors are punctuated by black timber beams and quintessential stone floors. A unique built-in lounge next to a slow combustion stove in one of the living areas is definitely a talking point.

The arched entryways, the sunken nooks in the wall and the interiors give the place a Mediterranean feel.

According to selling agent Jack Booth of Booth & Booth real estate, who is presenting the property to the market with Bernard Booth, it is hard to put your finger on one defining style of interior design.

“It is unique for sure and has garnered strong interest as well,” Mr Booth said.

“It was originally built as two cottages but later was merged into one property.”

Not only is the cottage full of character charm, it has a unique history as well.

According to an information document provided by the selling agent, the land at 18 Vincent Street “was one of the first plots to be allocated in the City of Adelaide in 1837, a year after Proclamation”.

The information document stated, “The plot was purchased by Mr Charles Williams (Compositor) and Mr James Syme (Brewer) and was a portion of the Town Acre 657, only a year after Colonel William Light arrived in Adelaide in 1836.

“This land was later purchased by Mr David Tweedie, who also had large land holdings in what is now Burnside. In 1877, Mr Tweedie built two attached dwellings in Vincent Street.”

It was in the 1980s that the two cottages were renovated into one property.

Then in 1995, the home was further extended with a second storey.

“This extension was awarded a Commendation from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects,” the document stated.

The home features a contemporary upstairs addition of a master suite with a spacious sitting room, a walk-in robe, an ensuite with a shower, a toilet and a vanity unit and opening out to a private balcony.

Downstairs, the front door opens to the living room, complete with a built-in lounge and a combustion heater. This space flows to a kitchen and meals area, while French doors lead to the lounge, off which you’ll find the second bedroom and third bedroom or home office.

At the rear of the home you’ll find a store room and a combined bathroom and laundry complete with a bath.
