Stylish abode nestled in nature’s lap

Looking for a tranquil Hills escape close to all of the action? This Summertown home could herald the end of the search.

Are prices set to peak in 2022?

A stunning 1870s Summertown home has been lovingly restored and updated and is ready to charm those fortunate enough to call it home for the next 150 years.

Vendors Joy and David bought the property in 2017, attracted by its location, view and opportunity it presented for a grand transformation.

“It had great bones – it looked nothing like it does now, it was a real renovators delight,” Joy says.

“We were looking for a rural property and this was close to the town, needed a lot of work, and a bit of flair and love, and we could sense right away it had a beautiful soul. It also offers commanding views across the valley that can’t ever be built out and we love that we can be at Rundle Mall within 15 minutes. We’re about 100m from the Heysen Trail and then another 100m on from that you can see the city and the gulf and it gets the most amazing sunsets.

“Plus we can walk to several wineries; Stirling, Crafers and Uraidla are close and we’re also about a 400m walk from a bus stop. It’s beautiful here – because we’re about 600m above sea level, some days you are literally sitting among the clouds.”

The couple have since renovated their Ridge Rd home throughout, preserving its character charm while bringing it well and truly in line with contemporary standards.

“We made sure that we were sympathetic to the existing part, and the new part was really all about capturing those incredible views,” Joy says. “In saying that, we didn’t want it to be a show home, it had to work for us and it’s worked brilliantly.”

The home has up to three bedrooms, or two and a formal lounge with a fireplace. A central hallway leads past a courtyard to a gallery, off which sits the spacious kitchen, dining and living area. The home also has two garages – one with a workshop – and a cellar. It sits on a 2.02ha allotment of two fully fenced paddocks, a fruit block, veggie gardens and a stable.

“It’s a lovely house, a great entertainer, and the perfect place to take in all of the wildlife – we have kangaroos, koalas, kookaburras, currawongs and echidnas – all sorts come through here,” Joy says.

With the couple now heading interstate to be closer to family, Joy says it is time to say goodbye to the home they have loved, and hopes its next owners enjoy it as much as they have. “We’re very proud of it.”
