Mid-century meets modern in Hawthorn home
This home is perfect to entertain friends and family against the stunning natural gum-lined backdrop of Brownhill Creek.
A mid-century modern Hawthorn home offers a fantastic lifestyle and is a great place to entertain friends and family against the stunning natural gum-lined backdrop of Brownhill Creek.
Charlotte Chambers and Tom Archontidis bought the home almost nine years ago, with Mr Archontidis purchasing it without his then heavily pregnant wife even laying eyes on the home.
“We loved the area and it was close to schools the boys were going to go to and we really loved the split-level floorplan,” Ms Chambers says. “We did some renovation work on it when we first bought the home, because my husband had a vision of what he thought it could look like and we were able to achieve those results.
“We have always loved the mid-century aesthetic and were able to pull elements into a house that already had those good structural bones, and a striking look that came from it being architecturally designed in the ’70s. It was originally a red brick home, so we rendered it in white and put in the crazy paving – that paving style is synonymous with that era and that Palm Springs look and feel.
“
The era-appropriate inbuilt cabinetry looks original but that’s all bespoke carpentry, and having the kitchen bench built in and the bar, and the library and those sorts of things, it just completes that look, and now whoever buys it will just have to bring in a couch, a dining table and a mattress and make themselves at home because everything else you need is built in.”
The home sits on a 542sqm allotment and has three bedrooms – two with walk-in robes and one also with an ensuite. A central open-plan kitchen, dining and living area opens to an outdoor entertainment area and the home also has an office.
“The floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors allow you to open up the indoor and outdoor area, and it’s beautiful on a summer and spring evening with the sound of the creek in the background,” Ms Chambers said. “My husband loves light and spent a lot of time and money designing the lighting to highlight those amazing gums at the back of the home.”
The family are now looking to enjoy a seachange at their Aldinga home for a few years, before, hopefully, returning to the same area. “We’ve raised our family here and it’s just been wonderful – it’s ideal for another family or retirees that want a low-maintenance lifestyle close to the very best the eastern suburbs has to offer.”
