From a tired property to a gorgeous entertainer
This 1936-built Millswood home has been brought well and truly into the modern era and is set to delight for the next century.
A Millswood home has been given a new lease on life thanks to a breathtaking transformation, taking it from a tired property to a gorgeous entertainer.
Deanna and Ben Hughes bought the home in 2009, seeing the potential to create a family stunner.
“It was in original condition and a real fixer-upper,” Mrs Hughes says.
“We were looking for a project, and at the time we had one little one and then two by the time we moved in, but I was really looking to make a family home that would work for us for a number of years.
“We loved King William Rd and being able to walk down there to the cafes and restaurants and were looking for a bit of land that the kids could kick around a ball in the front yard, and this was perfect.”
Bringing a tired and dark stone-fronted home into the modern era – with the end result being unrecognisable from when the Hughes’s bought it – was no easy feat.
“We took almost three years to get all of the plans finalised and the work complete, and it was a real labour of love, but we took the time to get it right,” Mrs Hughes says. “I was particularly focused on it having a seamless transition from the old to the new. It’s turned out really well and we repurposed some of the period features of the original front rooms into the rear extension so it has a seamless look.”
Set on a 975sqm allotment, the home has four bedrooms and a study. An open-plan kitchen, dining and living area that flows to both a separate living area or guest suite, and a covered entertainer’s terrace sits at the rear, overlooking a sparkling in-ground pool. The home also has a double garage, a cellar and an attic.
“It’s a great entertainer and people feel really comfortable here,” Mrs Hughes says. “It’s nice that your friends know they can come over any time, and there are always people sitting out by the pool or at the breakfast bar having a drink. One time we were meant to have a school class party in Hazelwood Park but it was bucketing with rain so they all came here and we had 100 parents and kids and they all fit easily.”
With the couple now looking to sink their teeth into a new project, it’s time to farewell the home they love so much.
“It really feels like we put ourselves into this property and, moving on, it feels like we’re losing a part of ourselves, but we know someone else will love it just as much as we have,” Mrs Hughes says.
