From a dated property to a grand family home

Located on the edge of one of the state’s most popular wine regions, this home has undergone a stunning transformation.

Dream homes topping buyers' searches

Families looking to enjoy a fantastic entertainer’s lifestyle in a wonderful location should head south, the owners of this beautifully renovated McLaren Vale home say.

Raaj and Karen Menon bought the home in 2013 and have since transformed the dated property into a grand family home packed with quality features and plenty of room to move.

“It was a double brick home and we rendered the whole place and renovated it completely,” Mr Menon says. “It was really an old-fashioned home and we modernised it throughout – we put a lot of work into it. We added a wing with the master bedroom, renovated the kitchen and also built the alfresco area and wanted it all to match, so we made sure that it had a consistent look from inside to outside.

When we were initially looking for a home my wife went through and immediately fell in love with the location and then when she came to the kitchen area and saw the view out – because this home has a lot of windows – she just loved it.

“Everyone who comes here, the first thing they say is ‘what a view’, because it really is spectacular. You can see the d’Arenberg Cube from here. Plus McLaren Vale is so close, so we benefit from that.”

The home sits on a spacious 5.02ha allotment and has five bedrooms – the master suite with a spacious walk-in robe and a luxe ensuite. A home office or living room is nearby and the home also has a light-filled open-plan kitchen and living area, a separate living and dining room and a home theatre with a bar and seating for eight. It is surrounded by landscaped grounds, grazing land and native bush.

“It’s been just me here because my wife’s in Hong Kong,” Mr Menon says.

“I have a home office here – I build websites so I work from home – and it’s been a wonderful place to spend my time.

“When I’m not working I have a wonderful home theatre to enjoy and a great outdoor area I’ve been able to share with friends. When my wife is here we do lots of entertaining. It would be great for a family with three or four kids because there is so much space. It really is a fantastic home.”

Having done the whole ‘long-distance’ thing for a number of years now, Mr Menon says the time has come to sell, and the couple is moving to Penang.

“We’re really proud of what we’ve done here and will really miss it because it’s been just such a wonderful home,” he says.
