Beloved winemaker Duncan MacGillivray’s Macclesfield home hits the market
He was a larger than life character behind a beverage that got the party started, and now this late winemaker’s Hills home could be yours. If you think the facade’s impressive, wait til you see inside
He was a larger than life character who invented a beverage that got many a party started, and now the late Duncan MacGillivray’s home – which is every bit as bold and future-focused as the famed entrepreneur was – could be yours.
Mr MacGillivray and his wife Oopy built their Troppo Architects-designed home at 49 MacGillivray Lane, Macclesfield, in 2011 with Oopy saying the property was very much a reflection of both of their personalities – but that Duncan’s shines through particularly strongly in the design.
“We owned the surrounding vineyard and we built the home with a young family, lots of visiting wine writers and different people staying in mind, and it was a place to have entertainment, family events, a bed and breakfast and all the things that go with that kind of a house,” Mrs MacGillivray said.
“We did it together. It’s very much in the Troppo style with all of the corrugated iron, and that spoke to Duncan because of his background as a jackaroo – he loved that country feel.
“Anyone who knows him knows he did love a veranda and somewhere to entertain, talk all sorts of things and enjoy a wine, so there’s a huge amount of Duncan in this place.”
Mr MacGillivray, who died of a heart attack at 66 in 2014 just three days into a family holiday in Bali, was an agriculture and tourism entrepreneur with a broad career that included wineries, export initiatives, the establishment of Kangaroo Island Pure Grain, and the invention of Australia’s first ready-to-drink – Two Dogs alcoholic lemonade.
He was also a board member of both the Premier’s Food Council and Premier’s Wine council and a past chairman and patron of The Hutt St Centre Foundation.
The four-bedroom home has an infinity pool and numerous indoor and outdoor entertainment areas and sits on a 3.66ha allotment complete with a 0.4ha riesling vineyard and a two separate self-contained apartments – the riesling Room and the Yacka Room.
“They were mostly invite only and later when we were doing functions and things at a wedding venue in Macclesfield it was a place for the brides to come and have their photos taken and nervous pre-wedding drinks,” Mrs MacGillivray said.
“It’s been very special and that’s the reason I’ve kept it these past 10 years, but it’s too beautiful a place not to share and because I’ve very busy training racehorses and my boys have left it seems to be the perfect opportunity to let someone else put their stamp on it and use it how they want.
“It needs to be lived in, have kids in the swimming pool and people on the deck enjoying the view – whether it’s simply with family and friends or it lends itself to a more commercial endeavour, it’s meant to be enjoyed.”
Offered without a price guide through Arabella Hooper and Lincoln Marshall of Harris Real Estate, expressions of interest close on Tuesday, March 19.
