One person wins $60m Powerball jackpot

One lucky Powerball player has collected a whopping $60 million jackpot making it a great start to the New Year.

The lucky numbers you needed were 15, 5, 28, 20, 29, 34, 27 and the Powerball was 8.

The Lott said after a few missed calls the winner, a Brisbane man in his 30s, finally picked up the phone to discover he was $60 million richer.

“Mate, this is bloody unreal,” the man exclaimed. “I think anyone who gets hit with this info would think it’s surreal. It’s just unbelievable.

“There is a massive shock factor. You always daydream, but you never really expect it to happen. It’s a lottery after all!

“I know you’ve confirmed it, but initially, when I saw this on The Lott app I thought this has to be a gee up or a glitch in the system. Surely I haven’t just won $60 million,” he said. “I don’t think I’m going to get a lot of sleep tonight.

“It’s a lot to think about now. I know the money will help a lot of people,” he said. “I can buy my first house, help family and friends and have plenty of holidays.

“I still plan to turn up to work in 2022 too!”

In 2021 there were 14 Powerball division one wins that have collected $550 million worth of prizes.

Seven of these wins were from NSW, four from Queensland, two from Victoria and one from Western Australia.

While there has been the same number of division one winners in 2021 so far compared to last year, these winners have collectively pocketed about $80 million more in prize money than their 2020 counterparts.

Around this time last year, a Sydney tradie nabbed a $30 million jackpot and it changed his life — though not entirely in a good way, he recounted to news.com.au.

The now former tradie aged in his 30s told news.com.au earlier this year: “What my motto has become, I guess winning the lotto doesn’t make you any happier, it just makes life easier.

“If you’re not happy, and you want to win the lottery (to change that) you’re going to be terribly mistaken.”

The man spoke to news.com.au on the condition of anonymity after some “weird” experiences when telling friends and family about his new millionaire status.

“People have come out of the woodwork,” he explained.

“A lot of people find out through the grape vine, they never actually ask you. I had someone that I haven’t even seen since I was school in, probably 15 years ago.”

One very close friendship soured because “they didn’t take it well” when he told them he was now a multi-millionaire.

Life after $30 million

The man no longer works as a tradie and enjoys not having to get up at 4am some mornings.

Instead, he works part-time in the entertainment industry, a maximum of 25 hours a week to “pass the time”.

He bought a house for himself as well as a holiday home and also a boat.

Instead of buying a brand-new car, he got a second hand car.

“I still like to go out and have a drink with friends, no point blowing big money on an expensive car,” the down-to-earth guy said.

Only his parents, immediate family members and some close friends know that he become a multi-millionaire in the space of one night.

“To be honest it’s one of those things where it leaks out. People never know the full amount,” he said.

He plans to travel to the US next year once borders have opened fully.
