A couple who won $1.7 million in Saturday’s Tattslotto draw have revealed they initially thought they were being scammed after discovering the win in the dead of night.

The man, from Gippsland, Victoria, told The Lott the shook his wife awake in the early hours of Sunday morning, unsure if they had really won.

“He told me we had won $1.7 million but he thought it was some sort of scam,” his wife revealed.

“I also thought he was joking but then we looked into it together and realised it was real.”

The man said he and his wife felt “awesome” after the win, which he said will open the door to a life of leisure.

“How do we feel? Incredibly awesome! On top of the world,” he said.

“This is life-changing for us. We’ve had to stop each other’s thoughts from running wild.”

His wife added: “Honestly, we don’t know exactly what we want to do with the prize, but we look forward to living life with a bit of ease. We’ve worked hard our whole lives.

“We will keep this win to ourselves as we live in a small town, but that makes it extra special.”

The couple’s prize was one of three division one winning entries. They pocketed a total of $1,720,294.16.

Their winning 50-game QuickPick was purchased at Raymond Street Lotto in Sale, Gippsland.

Raymond Street Lotto manager Angela Harry said the win had sparked a flurry of rumours about which lucky residents had picked up the huge sum.

“We’ve been talking about it all morning with customers wondering who the fortunate winners could be,” she said.

“Hopefully this is the start to a winning streak for us and there will be many division one winning tickets to come.”

Another of the division one winners in Saturday’s draw, a man from Ramsgate in NSW, said his $1.7 million will help to buy his first home.

“You’d think I’d be more excited, but I think my body is still in shock,” he said.

“I’ve just been shaking my head since I checked my ticket yesterday morning.”

The win will “undoubtedly change my life”, he added.

“For one, I want to buy a house which means it’s time to hunt for that first home,” the man exclaimed.

“It seems surreal to even say that. I can’t wait to tell my family. I’ll help my brothers and sisters and still be able to live the life I’ve always dreamt of.”
