The Lott shares call to Qld $1 million division one lottery winner

It’s a moment most of us have dreamt of – and one lucky Queensland man has shared what it’s really like to get this life-changing call.

Winning the lottery is the stuff of fantasies for most Aussies – but sadly, most of us will never know what it’s actually like.

But if you’ve ever wondered exactly what would happen if you received a life-changing call informing you that you’ve hit the jackpot, the mystery has just been solved.

That’s because Australia’s official lottery provider, The Lott, has just shared a recording of a phone call with a Queenslander who won a division one prize earlier this year.

The unnamed man – who was one of four division one winners – ended up pocketing a staggering total of $1,095,232.87.

In the clip, The Lott spokeswoman Lauren Cooney can be heard asking the man if he’d had the chance to check his online entry to the Saturday draw before confirming he was one of the lucky winners.

The clearly stunned man could respond with little more than a few expletives initially before telling Ms Cooney his “heart is just racing”.

He then told Ms Cooney he had “a good feeling” about the ticket, although he had no idea he had won big before the call.

“Oh, you don’t understand, that’s just amazing … oh my God,” he said.

“That’s just crazy, it made my day. I was actually having a crap morning, thank you very much.”

Ms Cooney has personally called winners who have collectively scored hundreds of millions of dollars in the almost two years she has worked for The Lott.

The former journalist previously told news.com.au it could take up to one hour after lottery numbers were drawn for officials to confirm a registered winner, and that division one winners of Monday, Wednesday or Saturday Lotto, Powerball, Oz Lotto and Set For Life games and first-prize winners of Lucky Lotteries were phoned by representatives who broke the good news.

Massive jackpot winners will be called the night of the draw, while others will be phoned the next morning.

She told news.com.au the Queensland man’s “really fun reaction” had particularly stood out to her, but that calling any winner was the best part of her job.

“There’s always a feeling of excitement when I get to call our division one winners – knowing I’m about to change someone’s life in that very moment gives me butterflies,” she said.

“Hearing people’s reaction to the news and what difference the prize will make in their life is certainly the best part about my job.

“Everyone’s reactions can be so different and it’s always great fun when the winner hasn’t checked their ticket yet and they have no idea why you’re calling them.

“This phone call was exactly like that, the winner had absolutely no idea he’d won division one the night before and got such a shock when I broke the news to him. He was just so blown away, his reaction was priceless and one that’s stuck in my memory.”

While you might expect people to swear, scream or faint, Ms Cooney said the most common reaction was “stunned silence” and disbelief.

“It will often take quite a lot of convincing for them to believe they have won a division one prize – I might have to tell someone 10 times before they completely understand,” she said.

Sometimes, the winner still doesn’t believe their good luck with many believing they are being pranked or scammed.

“We tell them that our advice is they check their ticket, and of course they’re going to be calling us back,” Ms Cooney said.
