TattsLotto $2m winner’s perfect timing after being stood down from airline work

A Melbourne man who was stood down from his airline job as a result of COVID-19 is now “set up for life” after hitting the jackpot.

Australia's biggest lotto winners ever

A stood-down airline worker has hit the jackpot at the “perfect time” after winning a life-changing $2 million this weekend.

The unidentified man, from Melbourne, held one of the ten division one winning entries nationally in TattsLotto draw 4071, drawn on Saturday.

Each lucky winner pocketed $2 million.

After confirming his good fortune with lottery officials on Monday morning, the man revealed the win came at the “perfect time” for his family as he had recently been stood down from his aviation job due to the coronavirus crisis.

While he is thrilled with the win, the man said he and his family would not be making any rash purchases until the city emerged from lockdown.

“What more can you ask for! It has actually come at the perfect time for us,” the stunned man said. “I’m an airline worker and I’ve recently been stood-down due to COVID-19.

“I saw that there was a $20 million Superdraw and I thought to myself, ‘I wouldn’t mind a share of that.’ So I bought a ticket.

“I was sitting at home with my family on Saturday night when I checked my ticket on the app.

“It came up on the screen that I had won $2 million. I didn’t believe it. I just calmly cleared the numbers and casually said to my wife, ‘Hey, can you check that for me’.”

He explained his wife double checked and “went into shock” after confirming the good news.

“We just kept checking the ticket all day,” he said.

“We would have loved to go out to a nice restaurant or something but staying inside is for the greater good, so we popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate instead.”

The man purchased his winning entry at Patterson Road Lotto News & Post, 51 Patterson Road, Bentleigh.

He said the family planned to spend the cash wisely.

“The first thing my son asked for was a sports car, but I told him we had to keep our heads on,” he said.

“We can’t do much at the moment, but we’ll probably look at moving into a new home in the future.

“This will really set us up for life.”

Patterson Road Lotto News & Post owner Daniel Nguyen said he was thrilled one of his customers had taken home a division one prize.

“We are very happy for our store and our winner,” he said.

“This is the third time our store has sold a division one winning entry since we took ownership three years ago.

“We can’t wait to share the happiness of this memorable day with our customers.

“We will be telling our local community that our outlet has done it again. We will be saying we hope the next winner comes from our store too.”
