A lucky punter in Western Australia has taken home a life-changing win in Thursday’s Powerball draw.
The Lotto player was the only ticketholder to pick all seven winning numbers – and the all-important Powerball – pocketing a whopping $30 million.
The winning numbers for draw #1484 were 33, 5, 8, 22, 14, 9 and 1. The Powerball was 2.
Seven division two players across Australia, meanwhile, will pocket just over $90,000 each.
What are the chances of winning?
Firstly, to take home a division one win, you’ll need to get the numbers. All seven and the Powerball.
And on that front, the odds are long – 1 in 134,490,400.
A division two win, needing all seven numbers and no Powerball, is slightly more achievable, with the odds becoming 1 in 7,078,443.
Economist Jason Murphy previously advised that if you’re going to play, you should avoid choosing patterns when selecting your numbers.
“If you want to milk every bit of value out of your lottery ticket, your need to choose numbers other people aren’t choosing,” he suggested.
“One decent method is to do a Quickpick and let the random number generator decide.
“Anything you think is an unpredictable anti-pattern – be it
• 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or
• 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 (prime numbers), or
• 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 (the Fibonacci sequence), or
• Your grandma’s birthdate, or
• The numbers of your favourite footballers –
is probably already a popular choice.”
