Australia's biggest lotto winners ever

A 10-share syndicate has taken out the $60 million Powerball jackpot, with a few saying they were set to retire today.

The ten people will take home $6 million each, but a few did not pick up calls from lotto officials and still have no idea that they had won.

Shares in the winning syndicate were sold at Nextra Willows News at the Willow Shopping Centre, Thuringowa Central.

Those who picked up the late-night phone call from lotto officials expressed shock and disbelief.

A Kirwan couple celebrated with a late-night scotch to digest the life-changing phone call.

“Are you fair dinkum?” the couple questioned. “Honestly? Honesty? I think someone must be pulling my leg!” the husband continued.

“I cannot believe this. I think I may have just retired,” he said. “We don’t usually buy syndicate entries, I’m not quite sure why we decided to!

“You have just made our life. Thank you very much!” he said.

One Townsville man was busy watching the football when a lottery official rang him this evening with the multimillion-dollar news.

“Holy sh**!” he exclaimed. “If it was raining movie stars, I’d end up with Lassie!

“Can I just write that down that amount?” he said. “You just ruined my good night’s sleep, but I think I can live with that.

Another of the North Queensland winners took great delight in breaking the news to her husband in the neighbouring room.

“My husband’s looking at me shaking his head. He doesn’t believe me,” she said. “I buy syndicate entries, especially for the big jackpots. My kids said to me today ‘if anyone’s going to win Powerball, it’s you!’.”

“You just made me the happiest person in the world.”

One of the syndicate members plans to use his $6 million portion of the prize to retire earlier than planned.

“This probably changes my life a lot. I’ll probably retire tomorrow,” he said. “This is just excellent! You’ve astounded me. I might go have a beer to celebrate!”

Nextra Willows News owner Robert Amisano said he was thrilled his store syndicate had taken home the $60 million Powerball jackpot.

“Oh my god! We sold first division?!” he said. “What’s even better is that it’s has been shared by 10 players. Sharing it around is just amazing!

“It’s great to have some good news to talk about!”

The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said some of the syndicate shares were unregistered and encouraged people to check their Powerball tickets.

“There could be a few people waking up and going about their day with no idea they’ve just won $6 million,” he said. “If you purchased a syndicate entry from Nextra Willows News, make sure you check your tickets today!”

Powerball has finally gone off with one person winning a staggering $60 million jackpot.

Only one ticket had the lucky numbers which were 13, 19, 18, 17, 11, 16, 20 and the Powerball was 15.

There were also 24 division two winners who came so close to taking home the jackpot but will still receive almost $37,000, which is not a bad consolation prize.

Last week $40 million was up for grabs, and before that $20 million was on the prize table, but no punter was lucky enough to claim anything.

Earlier this year, after weeks of no wins, the jackpot surged to $80 million, before it was eventually won by two NSW residents.

Australia’s biggest individual lottery winner has shared her experience to help whoever it is that wins the whopping prize.

The Sydney mum took home a $107 million Powerball prize in January 2019 and was worried about how some people might react to her good fortune.

“There’s only a handful of people who know the full truth,” she told an official from The Lott recently.

“Honestly, everyone I told broke down in tears, happy tears.

“I don’t think one person didn’t have a little cry. They were all genuinely so happy and excited for me.”

The Sydney mum, who worked as a nurse, waited for the news to sink in before telling others.

“The people I have told were all so thrilled to be let in on the secret and to be one of the people who helped guide me in the right direction,” she explained.

“I have a small group of very loyal friends, and you just don’t know how people will react, but I haven’t had any negative responses.

“No one has told me that I’ve changed or anything like that. And I haven’t changed, it doesn’t matter how much money I have, people need me to be me and that’s really important.”

She also chose to tell her boss, who took the news well.

Despite winning enough money to last a lifetime, the mum chose to keep working.

“Nursing is something that is in my DNA,” she said.

“I can’t not do it.”

Last year, there were 14 Powerball division one winners, who took home more than $470.1 million in prize money.

Of the 14 Powerball division one winning entries in 2020, six were from Queensland, five in New South Wales and three in Victoria.

The last chance to enter is an hour before the draw, at 7.30pm AEST.
