THERE is just one day remaining for someone to claim a winning lotto ticket, worth $87 million ($US63 million).

The SuperLotto Plus ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven in Los Angeles in August but is yet to be redeemed at a California Lottery office.

If the lucky winner fails to show up at a lottery office by 5pm Thursday (midday Friday, local time), they will forfeit the jackpot, officials say.

The California Lottery warned the ticket holder back in November that they had 180 days to claim the jackpot. The winning numbers are 46-1-33-30-16 with a Mega number of 24.

And, in a bizarre twist, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that just hours before the deadline, a man has filed legal papers saying he was the rightful winner and that lottery officials “destroyed” the evidence.

In papers filed Wednesday morning in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Brandy Milliner said he already submitted the winning SuperLotto Plus ticket to lottery officials, and even received a congratulatory letter, the Times reported.

However, Mr Milliner said the lottery office later reneged on his payment, sending him a second letter informing him that a review of the ticket found it “too damaged to be reconstructed”.

Mr Milliner is now asking a judge to declare him the winner of the jackpot.

If a winner is not decided by the deadline, the cash prize would be the largest unclaimed SuperLotto Plus ticket in California. The current largest unclaimed prize is $28.5 million for a ticket sold in San Lorenzo in 2003.

Not surprisingly, unclaimed lotto winnings tend create mayhem with similar scenes in the UK last month over its $67 million (£33 million) mega jackpot.

Hundreds had come forward claiming to have won the unclaimed half of a record £66m prize, including the ‘Lotto gran’ Susanne Hinte.

Ms Hinte claimed she had put the winning ticket through the washing machine. The six winning numbers were still visible, but the barcode, date and serial number were all missing.

In the end the rightful winner came forward, but chose to remain anonymous.
