Jennifer Lopez’s fiance Alex Rodriguez faces $70 million family feud

Alex Rodriguez is in the middle of a nasty dispute with his former brother-in-law, who is after a slice of his $1 billion real estate empire.

How Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez Met

Alex Rodriguez is being sued by his former brother-in-law, who has accused the baseball star of cutting him out of a joint real estate business.

Rodriguez, a former New York Yankees champion who is now engaged to singer Jennifer Lopez, is being pursued by Constantine Scurtis, the brother of his ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis, to the tune of $US50 million ($A70 million).

According to Daily Mail Australia, the pair launched a real estate business together in 2003, with their original deal giving Rodriguez a 95 per cent stake while Mr Scurtis got the remaining 5 per cent as well as a 3 per cent acquisition fee on properties.

The publication claimed they built up a $1 billion property empire together, but that after Rodriguez and Ms Scurtis split, Mr Scurtis was “pushed out of the venture and denied profits”.

Rodriguez has also filed a counterclaim, alleging his former brother-in-law withdrew money without permission.

In legal documents seen by news.com.au, judge Maria de Jesus Santovenia recently decided Mr Scurtis could seek punitive damages in the case, which has been underway for six years, and said his motion provided a “reasonable showing” to support the claims.

His lawyer, Gonzalo Dorta, told Daily Mail Australia “celebrities are not above the law”, while Rodriguez’s lawyer John Lukacs claimed the case was “baseless” and that they “absolutely dispute liability for all claims asserted”.

The latest drama comes after Rodriguez and Lopez announced they were putting their wedding on hold “indefinitely” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

They had been set to tie the knot in Italy during the summer after getting engaged in March 2019.

Lopez has been married three times before, to Cuban waiter Ojani Noa, backup dancer Cris Judd and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins Max and Emme, 12.

Rodriguez has two daughters with Ms Scurtis, Natasha, 15, and Ella, 12.
