Tasmanian Police issue warning over counterfeit $100 notes circulating throughout southern areas

Counterfeit bank notes are circulating throughout one state and police are urging locals to look out for one tiny detail.

Tasmanians are being warned to be wary of counterfeit notes circulating throughout southern areas of the state.

Counterfeit $100 notes are being used throughout Hobart, Glenorchy and Bellerive.

Inspector Jason Klug said the notes were easily identifiable as fake once inspected.

“While people might not notice at first glance, the notes have words such as ‘this is not legal tender’ written on them, and the usually clear plastic element is black and not transparent,” he said.

“When handling cash, check notes for any inconsistencies such as this before accepting them as payment.”

Inspector Klug said people should contact police and provide any relevant information, including CCTV, if they detect a counterfeit note.

“Please be aware that these notes are circulating and check that the cash you are handling is legitimate,” he said.
