An expert has urged Aussies to keep an eye out for this rare $2 coin. Do you have one lying around?

Is your $2 coin worth a fortune?

Australians have been urged to be on the lookout for a rare $2 coin after a money expert said it may be worth up to 20 times its original value.

Popular TikTok creator The History of Money gave a rundown of the limited-edition coin, which was released in 2015 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Australia’s landing at Gallipoli.

Joel Kandiah, who runs the account, detailed the coin’s “powerful imagery”, including the words “Lest We Forget” in the centre, surrounded by a red circle and, at the outer, depictions of poppies and soldiers’ graves.

@thehistoryofmoney 2015 Lest We Forget coloured $2 coin is a rarity that many people seem to ignore. With a low mintage of 1.46 million, this coin is extremely hard to find nowadays. If found, the coin has a value of $20 to $40, depending on condition. #australia#money#coins#coincollecting#numismatics#thehistoryofmoney♬ Space Song - Beach House

The striking coin had a “very limited mintage” of 1.46 million, Mr Kandiah said, adding: “If you do find one, they’re worth between $20 and $40.”

“Happy hunting!” he said at the end of the clip.

Commenters said they were keen to add the coloured coin to their collections or celebrated that they already owned it.

“Thanks for the info! I found one last month,” one person said.

“I have 10 of them,” added another collector.

But the commemorative coin isn’t the only Aussie coin that may be worth more than its face value.

Two more beautiful Australian coins were recently recognised internationally, picking up prizes at the Coin of the Year awards.

The $2 Honey Bee coin, which was made last year and features two bees circling a yellow halo of honeycomb, surrounded by native flowers, won Best Circulating Coin from a field of more than 500 coins from 50 countries.

The Great Barrier Reef coin, which pays homage to one of the world’s great natural wonders with clusters of coral, a shark and a shimmering school of fish, won the Most Artistic Coin award. The Royal Australian Mint made the design in a special $5 silver-coloured domed proof coin and a $100 gold coloured domed proof coin.

In a separate video, Mr Kandiah detailed three more Australian $2 coins, all released in 2012, that may be worth more than their face value.

They included the Red Poppy $2 coin which, with a mintage of just 500,000, is worth up to $280, the Gold Poppy $2 coin, which is worth between $4 and $30 and the Aboriginal Elder $2 coin, which is worth between $3 and $8.

Recently, Woolworths and the Royal Australian Mint celebrated 100 years of Vegemite with the release of a limited-edition range of Vegemite-themed $2 coins.

Each coin in the series features a unique illustration surrounded by a circle of either yellow, red or black — Vegemite’s brand colours.

The first coin features a jar of Vegemite as its focal point, with the words “100 Mitey Years” at the bottom.

The second coin features a slice of Vegemite-smeared toast, with the words “Tastes like Australia”.

The third coin features a child eating a slice of Vegemite on toast, with the words “Happy Little Vegemites” in reference to Vegemite’s iconic 1954 ad.
