‘Love when brides get married looking very much like themselves’: Charli XCX’s wedding reveals wider trend

Just when you think celeb weddings are all the same one famous star does something unexpected

Singer Charli XCX wed musician George Daniel, and all anyone can talk about is what the star couple didn’t do.

When two famous people get married, it is usually a spectacle that exposes just how different celebrities are from the rest of us.

It is a big reminder that they have personal assistants and endless budgets, while the rest of us have siblings who have to help out of family obligation and a firm budget that makes you feel physically sick when you go over it.

Leave it to Charli XCX, though, to be ahead of the trend. She managed to pull-off a low-key celebrity wedding that came across as genuine, rather than a gimmick.

It also looked like a normal wedding, like the kind your trendy friend would throw that is actually fun to attend.

The couple got married at a town hall in Hackney, surrounded by fewer than 30 guests, and then held their reception at a local Italian eatery.

Charli XCX and the 1975 bandmate were then seen hanging out at the restaurant and \ wandering the streets as husband and wife with all their guests.

It is very on point for the singer, with a growing trend towards ‘quiet weddings’.

If you’ve never heard the phrase, you’ll need to get on TikTok because the Gen Zers are loving it.

The term basically just means a smaller wedding, less lavish and more barbecue vibes. The concept has naturally risen in popularity as cost of living pressures have increased.

According to social media data website, Aura Point, there have been over 62,000 monthly searches from couples trying to find their local registry office.

A recent survey found that 29 per cent of couples are opting for smaller, more intimate wedding ceremonies.

Despite the wedding being more relaxed, Charli XCX was still wearing a high-fashion custom Vivienne Westwood gown but, otherwise, the whole shindig looked unnervingly normal.

It didn’t look glitzy, over-the-top or inaccessible.

It looked low-key, but effortlessly cool, which is not a surprise seeing as Charli XCX made Brat summer happen.

The bride even had time to jump on TikTok and joke that if her musician groom didn’t cry when he saw her walking down the aisle, she’d be turning around.

Perhaps what is most interesting is that the singer’s chill wedding is garnering as much fanfare as, say, Tammy Hembrow’s Bryon Bay extravaganza, when she married Matt Zukowski.

Gen Zers online are loving it to the point where perhaps a giant wedding is now just another thing Millennials do that is considered cringe worthy by the younger generation.

“I don’t know how to explain it but I really love when brides get married looking very much like themselves,” one praised.

“Charli getting married at Hackney Town Hall, in Viv Westwood, then coming out the front to take pics like an East London royal wedding,” another Gen Zer raved.

“At Town hall? How very Brat of her,” someone else observed.

“She knows to make every moment unforgettable,” another said.
