Mum’s rant perfectly sums up living in Australia in 2023
A fed-up mum has gone viral after going on a furious rant about what it is like living in Australia in 2023 – and she says what we’re all thinking.
A mum has gone on a furious rant, perfectly summing up how Aussies are feeling as the cost of living continues to bite.
It is no secret that 2023 has been a hard year.
Aussies have copped the brunt of soaring inflation, rising interest rates and the worsening rental crisis, leaving countless people struggling just to make ends meet.
Victorian woman, Jess, is one of the many Aussies feeling the brutal impact of the cost of living crisis – and she is fed up.
“Does anyone else feel like, as the years go on, life is getting harder?” she asked her followers in a recent TikTok video.
She said she was struggling to wrap her head around “why everything is difficult” these days.
“Everything costs too much money. But what we are getting paid isn’t going up enough, because they can’t afford to pay us, because they don’t have enough money to pay us, because everything costs so much f**king money,” Jess said.
“So, basicially, everybody is coming into Christmas f**king broke. Everyone is broke this year.”
The woman said that everyone she knows is struggling to put on Christmas this year, which she labelled “so depressing”.
“Like, we’re going to have to go back to the olden days where you make presents out of a freaking pine cone and put some glitter on it,” she said.
At the start of the video, Jess noted that society was being told that “technology is changing and everything is going to be streamlined and amazing as time goes on”, but she feels that “everything is getting harder” instead.
She gave an example of going to the supermarket with her toddler. The mum said she avoids the self-service areas because it is “impossible” to keep her child in the trolley while she is scanning everything.
But the reduced number of manned registers makes this difficult and every shopping trip now ends with her toddler “screaming and upset”.
Jess also pointed out that just owning a car these days is “difficult”, saying: “Everything about having a car now costs so much money. The rego, you’ve got to have your insurance for it, the fuel for it. It’s hard.”
She then lashed out at Boomers, claiming the older generation’s mindset of ‘you need to do it for yourself’ didn’t make sense in 2023.
“Even though they had maybe the help of their families, they don’t want to help the next generation because they are like, ‘no, you need to learn to do it yourself’,” she said.
“So, that means simple things like working are hard with kids because they don’t want to look after your kids because you should be doing it yourself.
“Daycare and childcare cost too much money. So you’re either working to pay for childcare or you’re not working, not paying for childcare but still ending up with as little money, if you know what I mean.”
The woman then turned to the issue of the ‘Great Aussie Dream’ of homeownership, pointing out just how unobtainable that goal has become.
She slammed the repeated interest rate rises, saying it is leaving people “stone old broke coming into Christmas”.
The option of selling and moving into a cheaper house wasn’t even a possibility anymore, according to Jess, who questioned how they could find a cheaper house that was not full of “asbestos and falling down”.
She said even renting wasn’t a cheaper alternative to homeownership anymore, claiming you are paying “pretty much the same price as a mortgage” but you “don’t even own the house”.
“It’s ludicrous,” the mum said.
Even basic medical care is becoming unobtainable for the average Aussie, with prices increasing, bulk billing disappearing and wait times blowing out.
“Why is there a waitlist for doctors now? Excuse me, if I’m sick now, I need to see a doctor now,” Jess said.
“And I’m not going to go to emergency because they are so understaffed that people literally die in ambulances waiting to get into an emergency room.”
In the end, the mum revealed she was “just exhausted” and “needed to have a rant”.
“No matter what you do or how much you work, you can’t just save any money in 2023,” she said.
“I’m only predicting that it’s going to get worse in the future. So good luck everybody and Godspeed.”
When uploading the video on Tuesday, the woman noted that she “only scratched the surface of my rage” when filming the clip.
The TikTok has been viewed more than 41,000 times and racked up hundreds of comments.
Jess’ words clearly struck a nerve with many Australians, with people claiming she “nailed it” and everything she said was “100% right”.
“I have doubled my income but all my expenses have also doubled – so I’m not better off at all!” one person wrote.
“Every year I work harder and earn more but still am not better off. I lived better 10 years ago on apprentice wages,” another said.
One added: “This is an incredibly depressing yet perfectly accurate analysis of life these days unfortunately.”
A parent of young children claimed she makes it a “goal” to sit and home and not spend money just so her family can get by.
Another person agreed, saying they stay home because they “can’t do much except pay mortgage and bills”.
“Babes we are all in this sinking ship together,” one simply said.
However, there were some Boomers who didn’t appreciate being called out in the video, claiming they had it “just as bad”, if not harder.
“During the 80s interest rates went up to 19%. That was tough too,” one person said.
Another claimed they family “damn nearly starved” when their interest rates hit 25 per cent.
“Reality check. Us Boomers had it just as bad,” another wrote.
