Adults go without
WE CANCELLED Christmas presents for adults in our family. It got to the stage where they would ask for cash as they had a specific thing they wanted. So Christmas was about withdrawing a bunch of cash, then getting it back on Christmas Day or a dodgy $2 gift for those looking to make a profit.

Make a list
A LIST is mandatory. Start it early and make sure you have it handy so you can add to it easily. That way, people don't get left off. Do all physical store shopping at least a month before. Remember, layby is your friend.

Start online
I SPEND a lot of time researching online what I want to buy someone and also so that I can get the best possible bargain for that specific item. I spend a lot of time looking for a unique gift or something that the person cannot buy here in Australia.

Avoid the rush
I DON'T really like shopping online although I see the value in doing so. I prefer to make a list early, hit the shops early and take my time in choosing something special. I don't buy for the sake of buying and actually enjoy the process.

Festive fare
ARRANGE with family and friends to spend the money on good food instead of presents. Enjoy a meal of more expensive (and tasty) foods that you wouldn't otherwise have. No shopping, wasting of money or space for unnecessary gifts, and you still get to treat loved ones and enjoy the holiday together.
