A driver has been fined $200 and two demerit points for breaching a little-known road rule in Perth.

Driver sentenced for reckless driving after dangerously overtaking cyclists

A driver has been hit with a $200 fine for disobeying a little-known road rule.

In a video posted to Tik Tok, the driver, from Perth, can be seen moving over into a right-hand turning lane before pausing and continuing to drive straight ahead.

The fixed red light camera can be seen flashing twice, despite the traffic lights being green with the road clear of other drivers.

The user said the offence the driver committed was “driving contrary to arrows at intersection” and was penalised two demerit points.

A spokesperson from the WA Road Safety Commission walked through the video, explaining that the video highlights a number of rules that can land you in hot water.

According to the Road Traffic Code 2000, when a driver is driving in a marked lane at an intersection and there are traffic lane arrows applying to the lane, the driver must (where the arrows indicate a single direction) drive in that direction.

They included stopping at a red arrow, driving in the direction of traffic lane arrows applying to the lane and not driving across single, continuous lines dividing two lanes.

“Drivers can also be fined $300 and 3 demerit points (6 during holiday periods) if they cross a stop line when the traffic light is red, and $100 and 2 demerit points for crossing a single, continuous line.”

“My housemate got fined for an identical offence,” one user replied. ”Not obeying lane arrows instead of a red light fine.”

“I got fined and demerit point as well for the same reason,” another user said.
