BOEING has reported third-quarter earnings of $2.97 billion, a 33.7 per cent rise, while Coca-Cola has reported third-quarter profit of $1.37 billion.

HERE are six things making news in business and finance today.

1. SYDNEY — The Australian dollar has slipped against the US dollar, losing much of the gains it saw following surprisingly strong local inflation figures. At 0635 AEDT on Thursday, the local unit was trading at 76.42 US cents, down from 76.90 cents on Wednesday.

2. SYDNEY — The Australian market looks set to open higher after losing 1.5 per cent in the previous session and a mixed performance on Wall Street. At 0645 AEDT on Thursday, the share price index was up 12 points at 5,344.

3. BRUSSELS — In a race against the clock, the European Union has edged closer to being able to sign a free trade deal with Canada the next day after Belgium made progress in lifting the veto of one of its regions.

4. LONDON — The difficulties in concluding an EU-Canada trade deal show the importance of Britain reaching an agreement over its future relationship with the EU before it leaves the bloc, British trade minister Liam Fox says.

5. CHICAGO — Boeing has reported third quarter earnings of $US2.28 billion ($A2.97 billion) — a 33.7 per cent rise.

6. ATLANTA — Coca-Cola has reported third-quarter profit of $US1.05 billion ($A1.37 billion).
