US AUTHORITIES are recalling nearly three million Samsung washing machines following several reports of injuries, including a broken jaw.

HERE are eight things making news in business and finance today.

1. SYDNEY — The Australian dollar is higher against the US dollar, the yen but has fallen against the euro. At 0635 AEDT on Monday, the local unit was trading at 76.73 US cents, up from 76.69 cents on Friday.

2. SYDNEY — The Australian market looks set to open lower after the S&P 500 ended lower for a ninth straight day, the longest losing streak for the benchmark index in more than 35 years, as investors stayed on edge ahead of an uncertain US election. At 0645 AEDT on Monday, the share price index was down 29 points at 5,124.

3. WASHINGTON — US employers maintained a strong pace of hiring in October and boosted wages for workers, which could effectively seal the case for a December interest rate increase from the Federal Reserve.

4. LONDON — Parliament must accept that Britain’s vote to leave the European Union was legitimate and let the government get on with delivering Brexit ‘in full’, Prime Minister Theresa May says.

5. BERLIN — Volkswagen says German prosecutors have widened their investigation of the emissions scandal to include the chairman of the company’s board of directors.

6. SAN FRANCISCO — US authorities have announced a recall of nearly 3 million Samsung washing machines following several reports of injuries — including a broken jaw — due to “excessive vibration”.

7. SEOUL — Samsung Electronics says it will offer an artificial intelligence assistant service in the upcoming flagship smartphone.
