Dollar rises after good retail sales data

THE Australian dollar rose by a 0.25 of a US cent after the release of stronger than expected retail trade data.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics at 11.30am (AEDT) today showed retail sales in August rose 0.6 per cent, which was a bigger rise than the market forecast of 0.2 per cent.

At 11.31am (AEDT), the Australian dollar rose to 95.36 US cents, compared with 95.16 cents just before the data was released.

The currency ended Monday's local session at 95.22 US cents.
