Telstra warns customers about missed voicemail text scam

If this text appears in your SMS message, there’s one thing you should not do under any circumstances.

How to detect and avoid online scams

Telstra has issued a warning after being notified of a scam alert for those on the network.

Late on Thursday, Telstra warned that an SMS scam was targeting Android phone users.

After being sent a typo-riddled text message, users were prompted to click on a link.

The link would result in malware being downloaded onto the phone.

“You have a missed lall (sic),” the message reads.

“Caller left ylu (sic) z mesxage (sic).”

Telstra warned: “It’s Android malware ‘Flubot’.

“It sends you a message along the lines of “You have 1 new Voicemail(s)” (or something similar) along with a link.

“Anyone can get the message, but the malware only affects Android users if they click the link.”

If you have a certain setting that allows installations on your phone from outside of a trusted location, this will result in downloading the virus.

Telstra share price

It comes as the telco giant’s shares reached a year-long high after consumer confidence following their end of 2020-2021 financial year results.

At time of writing, the stock was on $3.97, the highest it’s been over the past 12 months, a rise of 3.7 per cent.

Telstra’s annual results buoyed its stock price.

The company reported a net profit of $1.9 billion, up 3.4 per cent compared to a year ago.

That was despite its total income falling 11.6 per cent for the 12 months to June, while earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation slid 14.2 per cent.

Shareholders will receive 8 cents in dividends for every share they hold.

However, what really excited shareholders was its buyback scheme.

Telstra plans to return $1.35 billion to its shareholders via an on-market share buyback.

The company has all that extra cash because it recently sold its Telstra InfraCo Towers for $2.8 billion.

The shareholder buyback plan is expected to begin sometime after September 16.

Over the course of the 2020-21 financial year, Telstra stocks rose by 15 per cent.

They expect their total income for the coming financial year to rise to $23.6 billion.
