THE Australian dollar has fallen against a stronger US dollar after the US Federal Reserve said further gradual reductions in its stimulus program would be appropriate as long as the economy keeps improving.

At 0630 AEDT on Thursday, the local unit was trading at 90.05 US cents, down from 90.19 cents on Wednesday.

The minutes of the Fed's January policy meeting said it would further reduce its monthly bond purchases beyond the $US10 billion cut to $US65 billion it made in January.
