Hundreds queue for glimpse of Obama at the University of Queensland

WHETHER they won tickets in a ballot or were invited there, US President Barack Obama has already won thousands of fans thanks to his address at UQ.

HUNDREDS of students and members of the public have queued to catch a glimpse of US President Barack Obama at the University of Queensland.

The President’s side speech is a major highlight of the G20 weekend in Brisbane where he is expected to address leadership in the Asia Pacific region.

Saint Leo’s College members Dominique Jorgensen, Stuart Kinsella and Sam Moyle said they were “stoked” to get a chance to see the President in the flesh — a surprise made sweeter by the fact it came at the last minute.

“We only found out it was a possibility on Tuesday,” said Sam Moyle.

The trio were lucky to get some of the 50 tickets balloted to their college of 213 students. But said there’s also been some social media rivalry from those who missed out.

“There seems to be a conflict between some of the UQ students that didn’t get invited,” Mr Moyle said.

Dominic Jorgenson, 20, said it was the chance of a lifetime to see the President and he doesn’t think Abbott would draw the same kind of crowd.

“I can’t think of too many other people in the world who you’d want to see on the same scale,” he said.

It’s not known if the President will take questions from the 2000 people invited at the official White House event but if he does, Stuart Kinsella is keen to ask him about what he thinks of Russian President Putin’s latest move.

“I’d like to see what he thinks about Vladimir Putin sending warships to Australia,” he said
