Coles and Woolies’ surprise price drop on Christmas staple amid price gouging allegations
In a surprise move, Coles and Woolworths have announced a significant price drop on a beloved Christmas staple.
The supermarket giants have revealed they’re holding the line on the price of their half-leg Christmas hams, keeping them at the same affordable price as last year. Coles shoppers can grab their Single Smoked Beechwood Half-Leg Ham, while Woolworths offers their award-winning Half Leg Ham, both for just $8 per kilogram.
“We know that the Woolworths Half Leg Ham is a centrepiece on countless Christmas tables, with over half a million Australian families choosing it last year,” said Woolworths director of meat, poultry and seafood, Tim Dudding.
“This ham isn’t just a holiday tradition – it’s an award-winning customer favourite, renowned for its quality and flavour. That’s why we’re pleased to offer it again this year at the same great price as last year of $8 per kilo.”
Coles echoed this sentiment, highlighting the value their Christmas ham offers.
“At $1.50 per serve, our 100% Australian and sow stall-free Single Smoked Beechwood Ham is a classic Christmas Day staple,” said Coles own brand development chef, Michael Weldon.
This price drop comes at a time when both Coles and Woolworths are facing scrutiny over allegations of price gouging. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recently launched legal action against the supermarket giants, accusing them of misleading customers with deceptive pricing practices.
The ACCC alleges that Coles and Woolworths artificially inflated prices before offering discounts, making the “sale” prices appear more attractive than they actually were.
This commitment to keeping prices low is significant, especially considering the rising cost of groceries. Coles lowered their ham price from $8.50 per kilogram last year, their lowest price since 2019.
Woolworths also reduced their price from $8.50, claiming this is their lowest price since 2014.
Christmas menus unveiled
In addition to their half-leg hams, Coles and Woolworths have both released details of their wider Christmas ranges, offering customers a variety of festive products.
Woolworths’ Christmas menu features a mix of new and returning items.
New additions include a Biscoff Trifle, Macro Chicken Roast with Honey, Macadamia and Orange stuffing.
While, popular favourites like the Gold Davidson Plum & Gin Tarts and the Pavlova Wreath with Daintree Vanilla will also be making a comeback.
Coles has also launched a range of Christmas products, with over 90 items already available in stores.
Highlights include Reindeer Bao Buns and a Toffee, Date and Ginger Pudding.
This price war on a Christmas classic, combined with the diverse range of festive offerings, is a welcome development for Australian consumers, allowing them to enjoy a delicious and affordable festive season despite the current economic climate.
