Nokia 'might' launch tablet to rival Apple, says CEO, Stephen Elop
NOKIA is considering releasing a tablet - its first - in order to reclaim its former glory from Apple.
NOKIA is considering launching a tablet to take on Apple's iPad as it seeks to climb back from its current status as a minor player in the mobile phone market it once dominated.
Nokia chief executive officer Stephen Elop, in Sydney yesterday said the aim for Nokia was to get back into double digit marketshare and the way to do that in the long term was to expand its product range.
Mr Elop said that could include a Nokia tablet.
"We haven't announced tablets at this point but it's something we're clearly looking at very closely," he said.
"We're studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet. We're trying to learn from that and understanding what's the right way for us to participate at what point at time."
Mr Elop said there were advantages to both 7 and 10 inch tablets.
While Nokia has aligned itself with Microsoft in the phone market, Mr Elop said an Android tablet was still a possible option for the Finnish-based company.
This month Nokia will release the Nokia Lumia 620, a Windows-based phone aimed at Gen Y with a 5 megapixel camera and removable two-tone coloured backs.
Pricing details for the phone will be released today.
