Microsoft have cut 50 Australian jobs in the latest round of redundancies for the technology giant.

The new job losses come after more than 10,000 jobs were slashed by Microsoft across their global workforce in January.

Microsoft will have laid off 200 Australia-based staff this year, a fraction of its 2500-strong local employee base.

It’s not yet known which positions or areas are impacted by the redundancies, though a spokesperson has confirmed to NCA Newswire that they are taking place.

“Organisational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business,” a Microsoft spokesman told NCA Newswire.

“We will continue to prioritise and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners.”

Microsoft slashed 10,000 jobs, or about 5 per cent of its global workforce, due to “macroeconomic conditions and changing customer priorities” it said earlier this year.

“While we are eliminating roles in some areas, we will continue to hire in key strategic areas,” CEO Satya Nadella said in an email to employees in January.

“We’re also seeing organisations in every industry and geography exercise caution as some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one.”
