Sydney’s Star Casino will be fined $5000 after failing to follow coronavirus health orders, Liquor & Gaming NSW has announced.

NSW coronavirus cases rise linked to cluster in Sydney southwest

Star Casino will be fined $5000 for breaching COVID-19 public health orders.

Liquor & Gaming NSW said it would fine the Sydney casino after groups of patrons were seen standing and mingling in groups while drinking on Saturday.

It follows a $5500 fine issued to Double Bay’s Golden Sheaf Hotel this week after breaches were detected last Wednesday.

“There is a risk of COVID transmission if people are mingling while under the effect of alcohol,” Liquor & Gaming acting director of compliance Dimitri Argeres said.

He said the Star was aware of its obligations because the authority had visited twice over the past two weeks and had provided information about what they should be doing.

“The fine follows a third inspection on the weekend where we witnessed further breaches of the COVID-19 Safety Plan,” he said.

“We want to send a strong message that businesses must manage these risks to ensure individual patrons and the community are protected.”

Earlier today it was confirmed that a patron had tested positive for COVID-19 and had visited the venue on July 4.

There were 14 new cases of coronavirus in NSW in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, and a further seven cases were identified today up to noon.
