Zara, Topshop will ‘help WA’s retail sector recover’

THE state’s slowing retail sector will bounce back thanks to fashion giants like Zara calling Perth home, experts say.
WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Deidre Willmott said growth in the retail sector will recover given the state’s low unemployment, high average wages and continued economic growth.
“For a number of years, WA retail activity was growing at double the rate of other states and territories,” she said.
“However last financial year, growth slowed to just 1.4 per cent – the lowest since 2000-01.”
Ms Willmott said WA’s economy continued to grow and that’s why international retailers want to come here.
That includes fashion giant Zara, which opened its second Perth store in Murray Street Mall on Friday.
“Shops like Zara and Topshop bring many benefits to our local economy including direct and indirect jobs, greater choice for consumers and increased taxation revenue for government,” Ms Willmott said.
Another fashion giant, Topshop and Topman, is set to open its first Perth store on October 31 next door to Zara’s city centre store.
