A shopper who took issue with a sign about bananas inside a Woolworths store sparked a passionate debate after calling out the supermarket chain online.

A sign inside a Woolworths store suggesting customers cook browning bananas on the barbecue has sparked a passionate debate online.

The sign, spotted in the fruit and vegetable section of the supermarket, offered a guide for what shoppers should do with bananas according to their colour and ripeness.

Woolies said yellow bananas were perfect to eat or use in smoothies, while brown ones were ideal for baking and banana bread.

But it was the supermarket’s advice for browning bananas - ‘perfect to cook on the BBQ’ - that divided the internet.

“Wait what,” questioned the shopper who took the photo and posted it on Reddit.

Hundreds of people backed the supermarket and shared their favourite recipes for BBQ-cooked bananas.

“My missus puts some batter on them and makes banana fritters and they’re so good,” wrote one man.

“Grilled bananas with cinnamon, honey, and vanilla ice cream. Give it a go,” added another.

“You’re missing out if you’ve not bbq’d bananas! Slit down the middle whilst still in the skin, stick some chocolate in there, wrap in foil and stick them on the top shelf for 10 minutes,” wrote a third.

While the majority of reactions were pro-BBQ, some agreed that a hot grill was no place for a browning banana.

“This was my exact reaction when I saw this sign. Gotta be a warcrime. Not against cooking banana but I don’t know... on the barbie just sounds weird to me,” wrote one.

“Warm banana....yuck!” added another.

“I will absolutely (throw) any banana flopped onto my BBQ over the back fence and into the scrub and you can go fight the bush turkey for it,” a third wrote.

In the end, the shopper who took the photo in the first place admitted he was converted.

“You’re all making me hungry. I’m sorry for doubting you Woolies. I’m going to give some of these recipes a try.”
