The retailers open for business this Australia Day long weekend
Australia Day falls on a Sunday this year, which means the public holiday will fall on Monday January 27th. That’s good news for consumers.
As eskies are dusted off and barbecues fired up for the long weekend it is important to know where you’ll be able to find the sausages and beer this long weekend.
As Australia Day falls on Sunday this year the public holiday will fall on Monday the 27th, following the same rules as last year when Australia Day fell on the Saturday and made Monday the public holiday.
Trading hour regulations differ from state to state but most businesses will be open throughout the long weekend.
Worker pay on public holidays and Sundays will differ based on awards but most workers will be entitled to penalty rates on both Sunday and Monday.
In NSW, ACT, Northern Territory, Tasmania and Victoria businesses aren’t subject to any restrictions for the duration of the long weekend.
In Queensland most independent retailers and other exempt stores are also unrestricted for the long weekend, but opening hours for non-exempt stores including large retailers will vary across the state.
In Western Australia general retail stores in Perth’s metro area can trade on Monday from 8am to 6pm and normal Sunday hours (11am to 5pm) apply.
Rottnest Island is not covered by trading hours laws, nor are small and special retail shops that carry a certificate.
In South Australia things are more complicated as the laws change depending on store location and size.
Non-exempt stores in the CBD tourist precinct can trade from 11am to 5pm on both Sunday and Monday.
Non-exempt stores in the Metropolitan Shopping District and Glenelg Tourist Princt can’t open on Monday but can trade from 11am to 5pm on Sunday.
A store is non-exempt from restrictions if it has more than 200 square metres of floor area or 400 square metres if it's a grocery list.
Consumers can go online to find the list of exemptions in SA.
BWS has confirmed that stores across the country will operate under normal business hours for the duration of the long weekend, except for BWS Leichhardt and Canberra City which will be closed on the Monday.
Dan Murphy’s will also be operating under normal business hours as will all Woolworths supermarkets but customers are advised to check the website.
Woolworth’s metro centres in Sydney’s Metcentre, Strawberry Hills and 333 George Street will be closed on the Sunday, with Strawberry Hills and 333 George street remaining closed on Monday.
Coles will operate on Sunday opening hours on both the Sunday and Monday for much of the country.
