Sydney photographer Alana Dimou takes a stand against extreme milkshake madness

IT’S over. You can all go home now. This photographer is taking a stand against the extreme milkshake trend with these hilariously gluttonous parodies.

THIS ridiculous extreme milkshake trend has to end.

From Canberra cafe Pâtissez’s salted butter caramel shake topped with a slice of pecan pie, to Sydney cafe Foodcraft Espresso’s triple-decker Nutella doughnut ball concoction, the milkshake arms race has spiralled out of control.

Freelance photographer Alana Dimou has had enough.

“The cult. The cult of Extreme Milkshakes. It’s here and we’re all trapped in a vortex of milk and Nutella and garnishes the moment we open Instagram,” she writes on her blog.

“Donuts perched upon mason jars, Kit-Kats wedged like an unholy crucifix: doused in chocolate sauce knotted with lashings of whipped cream, a striped straw puncturing everything in its path, impaling every adornment.

“Heavy-handled jars of flavoured milk are spewing from so many cafes in pure copycat style, each establishment attempting to outdo the last, to outplay the originals who rightly hold the claim to fame.

“But, if you can’t beat them, join them.”

In protest, Ms Dimou has taken the trend to its absurd extreme with three mock creations of her own: S’Mores Chicken, Bacon Burger and Coles Baked Fresh Today Bakery Aisle.

“Be inspired,” she writes. “Eat marshmallows and chicken. Milkshake flavours are irrelevant now, the duty falls upon whatever lies on top. May God have mercy on us all.”

Ms Dimou said she doesn’t know where the idea came from.

“I grew up watching Ren and Stimpy, and I think because I never made it as a cartoonist I just imagine these disgusting things in my head, but because I can’t draw it I just build them all,” she told news.com.au

“I just find chickens really funny — they’re like the ultimate comic form. I laughed out loud to myself constructing this monstrosity.”

Ms Dimou stressed she wasn’t knocking the cafes that make the creations, but the response from the Instagram crowd obsessed with posting the latest ridiculous milkshake tower to gather likes.

“The cafes are doing a great job and raking in the money,” she said. “It’s more the response — people have to get it, they have to Instagram it so they feel good about themselves,” she said.
