Reject Shop’s Tesco move promises savings on your grocery bill
The first step in a major overhaul of The Reject Shop is under way and it is promising to save shoppers on their weekly grocery bill.
The first Tesco-branded grocery items have landed in The Reject Shop’s stores across the nation as part of the discount retailer’s partnership with the UK supermarket giant.
Over the coming months, 300 new Tesco products will fill shelves at The Reject Shop, including staples such as flour, pasta, rice and oil and everyday items like tea, coffee and biscuits.
There will also be baby products including including nappies, infant formula and baby wipes.
Stores in New South Wales, Canberra and Queensland are already stocking the discounted essentials, while Victoria will have the range by the end of the week.
South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia will all have the new range by the end of September.
The Reject Shop CEO Andre Reich said the chain was able to offer lower prices to help Australians save on their grocery bills because it could buy bulk from the Tesco brand.
“We’ve teamed up with one of the biggest supermarkets in the world selling their best-selling lines. The higher the volume we buy, the cheaper it will be for customers,” he said.
“A lot of people are struggling to make ends meet, that’s one thing COVID has taught us. We’re all facing tough economic times. This is about giving Australians the best-quality products at the best price,” he told news.com.au.
TESCO ITEMS AVAILABLE AT THE REJECT SHOP
Items that will be available include Tesco Gold Instant Coffee 100g for $6, tinned vegetable soup, bottles of vinegar and packets of rice cakes for $2 and Tesco biscuits are range from $2 to $2.50.
A litre of sunflower oil or a 1.5kg of flour is $2.50, microwave rice is $1.90 a packet, and boxes of peppermint and lemon and ginger herbal tea bags are $3.
“We’re going back to our roots to help Australians save. We continue to focus on really good-quality products at the cheapest price with high-volume lines,” Mr Reich said.

MORE PRODUCTS COMING
The three-year agreement with Tesco is expected to include hundreds of products in stores in the coming months.
Mr Reich expects the products to appeal to Australia’s 1.2 million British expats as well as Aussies keen to save on everyday items.
A Mouths of Mums Facebook group member commented: “I always shop at The Reject Shop for my cleaning and personal care products. Now there’s Tesco quality coming … GREAT NEWS!!!”

GOING ABROAD
It’s not the first international deal the retailer has done, with a similar partnership last year with the UK’s Card Factory.
Mr Reich said Tesco offered customers “more choice and a range of high-quality products that they won’t be able to source elsewhere in Australia”.
“Tesco has some of the cheapest prices in Europe and definitely some of the biggest volumes in Europe with similar standards as Australia,” he told news.com.au.
In Australia Woolworths and Coles hold the majority share of supermarket sales with Woolies at about 34 per cent, while Coles has 28 per cent and Aldi 11 per cent, according to Roy Morgan.
