An Aussie shopper has stunned with a remarkable food shop in which he picked up meat for just a few cents, saving $220.

A Coles customer has stunned Aussies with a remarkable food shop in which he picked up tons of meat for just a few cents, saving $220.

Travis Muir, from Ellenbrook, Perth, took to a Facebook bargain-hunting group to share his savings, which included a boneless pork shoulder for just 36c, down from $28.44.

He also picked up packages of diced lamb and grass-fed beef for just 4c a piece and a pack of beef sausages for 50c.

Chicken thigh fillets were nabbed for just 9c, while salmon steaks, a tub of mushrooms and three capsicums cost 10c each.

The most expensive item was a large box of sweet treats, which still only cost $7.20 down from $36, a savings of 80 per cent.

“This singular shop saved about $220,” the savvy shopper told Yahoo.

“We are a family of six and I have three children with additional needs. My quite active five-year-old with autism was difficult to get to bed, so I would shop quite late with him just before closing when the local shop (in Ellenbrook, Perth) was quiet.”

Mr Muir shared some tips to help other Aussies get similar savings.

“I‘m constantly comparing prices and quality, but I’m never really shopping to a list,” he said.

“I grew up watching Iron Chef so if I have several key ingredients, I then shop around the biggest savings.

“Every store may have different policies but from the stores I have visited it’s pretty consistent that between 3 to 4pm on weekends and 6 to 7pm on weeknights is when they try to markdown items for clearance.

“This does depend on staffing availability, so patience is the key. And respect the staff. They don’t have to make time to mark items down, so it’s important to appreciate it.”

The family of six doesn’t keep all of the deals for themselves. Mr Muir said he donates some of the food to food banks like Ellenbrook Meals or to local animal rescue centres.

According to Coles, individual supermarkets have different markdown policies and will discount products at different times.

“We know our customers love good value so when a product is near its best before date we often mark it down so it can be enjoyed for a cheaper price, instead of being wasted,” a spokesperson for the supermarket previously said.

“Markdowns do not uniformly take place at the same time across all stores. There are many things that can impact when this takes place including stock on hand, delivery schedules and team member rostering.”
