Woolworths customers have fired up at the multinational company after they discovered their “fresh” flowers had been “spray painted” pink over the Mother’s Day period.

Three furious shoppers took to social media to post photos of the bizarre act, showing the paint in question on the leaves and stems of the supermarket-bought flowers.

“Clearly I have been oblivious to this, but when did we start spray painting the flowers? Not happy Woolworths,” one woman wrote.

One customer said $20 was a lot to pay for “four sad-looking, painted flowers”.

A Woolworths spokesperson told NCA NewsWire that the “trend that has developed over the years” was a “common practice” on colour blooms.

“The use of bright coloured dye or floral paints is a trend that has developed over the years and a standard practice for the floral industry worldwide, while we recognise they are not everyone‘s cup of tea,” they said.

The spokesperson said the “dye and floral paints” used on flowers were not an attempt to hide any defects or imperfections but to merely “add some colour and difference to a range of bouquets.”

“We source fresh cut flowers across Australia and overseas because we know customers love the convenience of being able to not only get their groceries but also pick up a bunch of flowers for that special occasion.” they said.

“The dye is non toxic, non-irritating and is 100 per cent biodegradable,”

Not everyone was happy with the supermarket’s odd move.

“So my Mother’s Day flowers have been spray painted to look nice, thanks for that.” one user wrote.

“Your offer just gets better and better – RIP OFF.”
